Sinus infections are unfortunately a common part of life. They are uncomfortable (yet harmless) conditions that can strike anyone, of any age, at any time. But they are undoubtedly more common in children than adults.
Symptoms like dizziness, nasal congestion, a sore throat, and difficulty breathing are just some of the things that can be expected by children unlucky enough to become ill.
Most sinus infections will clear up on their own if you wait long enough. But if you (or your child) can’t bear the frustrating discomfort anymore, there are a few things you can do to speed up the healing process naturally.
Here are 3 of our top tips on how to get rid of a sinus infection fast.
Let’s get started:
1. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is one of the oldest tricks in the book when it comes to getting rid of sinus infections without going to the doctor. Housewives have been using this versatile and common method to save themselves and their children from pain and suffering for decades (because it works).
Mainly because of this:
Lemons have a huge amount of vitamin C in them (almost as much as an orange). Vitamin C is heavily used by your immune system to help fight off infection. The more vitamin C you have, the better your body can fight for you.
These benefits, combined with the soothing properties of lemon juice are what truly makes this one of the best natural ways to get rid of a sinus infection. A sore throat (that is symptomatic of a sinus infection) is often one of the most uncomfortable things that children suffering want to be relieved of. And lemon juice is a superstar for scuppering a sore throat. Simply follow the instructions below and you will almost immediately notice the discomfort of your sinus infection start to subside.
How To Get Rid Of A Sinus Infection With Lemon Juice
- Cut up one large lemon and extract as much juice as possible from it
- Heat a mug of water (but don’t let it boil)
- For additional soothing properties (or to make it taste great) add a little honey if desired
- Relax, and slowly sip the juice down
- Repeat twice daily
2. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is something that many of you reading this will already have in your home (if you don’t, it’s readily available in all good supermarkets). Many people swear by it as the best thing for a sinus infection in the world (even better than antibiotics).
It works, and it works well.
Just like lemon juice, apple cider vinegar will provide your body with the nutrients it needs to properly fight an infection. It does not contain a mega dose of vitamin C like lemon juice (it contains some), but it does contain vitamins A, B1, and B2 alongside healthy doses of calcium and magnesium.
This sounds great, but it’s nothing special. This doesn’t explain why so many people swear by apple cider vinegar as a remedy. Why don’t they just go to the doctor for sinus infection antibiotics like amoxicillin?
This is why:
The unique composition of apple cider vinegar has a rather unusual property that makes it the best way to get rid of a sinus infection without antibiotics.
It thins your mucus.
Within a few minutes of drinking apple cider vinegar (it works that fast) you will notice a change in the density and coloration of your mucus. Your mucus will initially turn from a thick white/green substance into a much thinner version of itself that is almost totally translucent. Thinner mucus allows your body to work much more efficiently at fighting the infection in your nose and is a milestone in the healing process.
It’s commonly recommended that you start this natural remedy at the first sign of infection. As soon as your child notices a cold coming on, or their nose starts tingling – get the bottle out and start the remedy. Catching it early prevents the sinus infection from developing as far as it normally would. This reduces discomfort from symptoms and drastically decreases recovery times.
How To Get Rid Of A Sinus Infection With Apple Cider Vinegar
There are two main ways you can use apple cider vinegar to clear a sinus infection. Using it in a tonic is the most common (and popular) method. But the nasal rinse option can also be utilized alongside it if you really want to kick the infection as quickly as possible.
Method 1 – The Tonic
- Warm around 8 ounces of water without letting it boil
- Add two large tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and mix well
- Consume the entire tonic as quickly as possible (there is no need to rush)
- Repeat daily until your sinus infection has totally cleared
Method 2 – The Nasal Rinse
- Wash your hands and rinse very well
- Add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a cup of cold water and mix well
- Pour a little of the liquid from the cup into the palm of your hand
- Close one nostril with your free hand, and snort the liquid into the other
- Repeat the process on the other nostril
Water is the giver of life. Everywhere we find this odorless, tasteless liquid on our planet we find some kind of living creature. Every single organism we know of relies on it to survive. Believe it or not, water can help you fight off your sinus infection, and relieve some of the symptoms at the same time.
How Water Can Help Fight A Sinus Infection: Hydration
It’s not a coincidence that both of the most effective and most popular home remedies for clearing a sinus infection we have listed above involve drinking some water. The constant production of mucus that is giving your child a runny nose is using up water, lots of it.
When fighting an infection of any kind it’s critically important that you keep your body working at its maximum possible efficiency. And when it comes to efficiency, nothing is more important than being properly hydrated.
Any kind of infection is going to put extra stress on your body and will require you to drink more water than normal. But with the additional water loss from mucus production – it’s even more important.
If you want to get rid of your infection as fast as possible, then get your child to drink as much water as they can. Stay hydrated, and drink at every opportunity.
Ideally, your child will drink more water than they want to.
And then they should drink some more.
How Water Can Help Fight A Sinus Infection: Steam
It’s not just hydration that water can help with. The inhalation of steam has several well-documented benefits that can help relieve the symptoms of a sinus infection. Breathing in steam clears up your sinuses and will help you breathe much easier. It’s not the most portable of remedies, and you can only really do it in your own home.
But if you need some instant relief, it’s great.
Try one of the following:
- Boil a bowl of water and hold it under your nose, inhale sharply (but be careful not to burn yourself on the steam)
- Have a long hot shower/bath and take repeated deep breaths, filling your lungs as much as possible each time.
Bonus Tip – How To Prevent A Sinus Infection
So by now, you should have a good idea of what you can do for your child if they have a sinus infection. There is usually no need to go to the doctor, and the remedies above will nurse your little ones back to full health as quickly as possible.
However, as a bonus piece of advice, we would like to mention some of the best ways to prevent your child contracting a sinus in the first place.
Prevention is always better than treatment.
Even the most diligent parents cannot totally prevent their child from getting a sinus infection, they are unfortunately a part of growing up. You kids will come into close contact with hundreds of other children while they are at school.
And it only takes one infected child to spread an infection throughout the whole school.
However, there are also many other ways children contract a sinus infection without requiring close contact with an already infected person.
Guess what one of the most common causes is:
Dust mites are in every single home, they are unavoidable. However, some homes have much more of them than others. When in large enough quantities these microscopic 8 legged critters cause irritation in the nose as they are allergens. Given repeated exposure, this can often cause your child to have a sinus infection.
Now for dust mites to have a real effect on your child they need to be in regular contact, almost daily in fact. This means that for most reasonably clean homes the only place they can usually cause issues is in the mattress (where the mites love to live).
Your child spends more time on their mattress than anywhere else, if it’s infested with dust mites a sinus infection can often be inevitable.
Despite how clean you think your mattress is, it’s impossible to tell if it is infested with dust mites from the outside. Unless your mattress is brand new, it probably needs a professional cleaning to reduce the chances of your child getting ill.
We understand the importance of children being safe from these little dusty beasts.
No child should be prevented from getting a safe nights sleep.
Every day we help parents from all over Singapore remove these nasty mites from their child’s mattresses. Giving them total peace of mind.
We are currently running a free mattress cleaning session promotion to help parents keep their children safe.
So there you have it, our top 3 tips for how to get rid of a sinus infection.
These remedies are not mutually exclusive. We strongly recommend that you treat your child with all of them (or at least two of them) at the same time.
Then, with a little bit of time (and the advice on this page) your child will be feeling on top of the world again before they know it. All without sinus infection medication.
Get well soon!
